Brent Crude
historyBrent vs WTI: the two prices that move the world
Brent is considered the global standard for raw oil rates, and also the most used. There are 4 crude oil streams that make up the Brent benchmark: Brent (sourced from the original Brent oilfield), Forties (sourced from the Forties field system), Oseberg (sourced from Norway's offshore Oseberg field), and Ekofisk (sourced from the older Ekofisk field in the southern Norwegian sector). All of those types are produced in the North Sea. Brent is the reference price for roughly 2/3 of globally traded oil, produced at the sea and loaded onto tankers for transport.
WTI (West Texas Intermediate) is a light and sweet crude grade and considered North America's primary pricing benchmark (most closely observed North American crude oil price), primarily traded through the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX, operated by CME Group), with physical delivery at a facility in Cushing, Oklahoma. WTI is traditionally produced in Texas and southern Oklahoma.
How this page stays current
- 01 fetch
Every 6 hours, we automatically fetch and pull the latest price from the configured source (official APIs), with an option to prevent suspicious price jumps, until it's fully confirmed.
- 02 record
Each price change is saved to our file database. Every price this site has ever shown stays auditable and controlled, and the page is rebuilt as pure static HTML for easy navigation.
- 03 label
Each card above shows the source name, the source's own timestamp and the fetch time and date for the price, and a freshness tag (real-time, delayed, daily or simulated).
What's the difference between Brent and WTI?
Brent and WTI are the world's 2 main crude oil benchmarks. Brent is the main global oil benchmark, based on North Sea, while WTI is the main U.S. oil benchmark, primarily sourced from US oil fields (e.g: the Permian Basin in Texas). Brent is light and sweet about 0.37% sulfur and an API gravity around 38 while WTI is lighter and sweeter featuring lower sulfur (~0.24%) and higher API gravity (~39.6).
